length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

A song written by someone who knew he would never return home. Michael Considine was a young Irish emigrant from County Clare who left for America around 1870. Composing the poem while dying in California at just 23 years old, he had emigrated hoping to earn money and bring his sweetheart (Mary MacNamara) to America—but never got the chance. Before he died, he sent the poem back to Ireland to a young nephew, which is why it survived at all.

The narrator “returns” to Ireland, meets friends, family, and his lost love, then suddenly wakes up… back in California. This reflects the emotional reality of 19th-century Irish emigrants—home could only be revisited in memory or imagination. “Tailor Quigley” and “Father Dan” were real individuals from his village. His love interest (“Mack the Ranger’s daughter”) was based on a real woman, Mary MacNamara. Even the setting—the fair on June 23—is a real annual event. So the song reads almost like a time capsule of a real Irish community in the 1800s.

Day 449 ❤️‍🩹 Bedlam City

The “Bedlam” in the song was a real place.

olikizuki

The “Bedlam” in the song was a real place. The title refers to Bethlem Royal Hospital, often nicknamed “Bedlam.” This wasn’t just any hospital—it became infamous as one of Europe’s earliest mental asylums. It dates back to the 13th century and later stood in London.

Shockingly, it was once open to the public, who could pay to watch patients as a form of entertainment. This gives the song a darker layer: when the narrator sings near “Bedlam City,” it’s not just a poetic place—it’s tied to real suffering, spectacle, and social neglect. Put together, the setting subtly suggests that her grief is so overwhelming it borders on madness—making “Bedlam” both a location and a metaphor.

BC is a traditional English folk ballad collected in the 19th century by folklorist Lucy Broadwood. At first glance, it sounds like a simple love song. But in most versions the lyrics describe a young woman mourning her lover, a soldier. Scholars believe it likely refers to conflicts like the Napoleonic-era wars. That means the emotional core of the song is grief caused by war, not just heartbreak. It’s actually a war lament disguised as a love song.

Unlike modern songs, “Bedlam City” evolved through oral tradition: different versions have missing or reconstructed verses, and some lyrics likely came from printed broadsides rather than a single original author. So what you hear today is a patchwork of history—part lived experience, part cultural memory.

Has been sung by many including Pyewackett, Claire Lloyd (with Folly Bridge), The Askew Sisters, Emily Spiers, Arthur Knevett, The Wilson Family, and The Elliotts (Derek, Dorothy, and Nadine).

Day 447 🦹‍♀️ Lovely Joan

Has been sung by so many, including Martin Carthy, A.L.

olikizuki

Has been sung by so many, including Martin Carthy, A.L.
